Solar panel installation: costs, payback and incentives
The price of a home solar system depends mostly on its size in kilowatts, your roof, and local labor costs. Installers quote in dollars per watt, which makes quotes easy to compare.
What drives the price
- System size: sized to cover your annual electricity use. Check twelve months of bills first.
- Equipment: panel efficiency and inverter type (string inverter or microinverters).
- Roof: pitch, shading and condition. Replacing an old roof before installing avoids paying to remove panels later.
- Batteries: optional, and they add a large amount to the total.
Estimating payback
Payback is the net cost after incentives divided by what you save each year on electricity. Your local electricity rate and net metering rules matter more than the panels themselves.
Incentives
Federal, state and utility programs change often and differ by location. Ask each installer which incentives they assume in their quote and verify them on official sites before you sign.
Questions to ask installers
Ask for the price per watt, the estimated yearly production, the panel and workmanship warranties, who handles permits and grid connection, and whether the quote is for a cash purchase, loan or lease.
