Legal planning: wills, living trusts, LLCs and trademarks
Some legal documents can be done online at low cost; others benefit from a lawyer. The more complex your situation, the more advice is worth.
Wills
A will names who receives your property and who looks after minor children. Online will services work for straightforward situations. Each state has signing and witness rules for a will to be valid.
Living trusts
A revocable living trust can let property pass to heirs without probate and keeps details private. It only works for assets you actually transfer into the trust.
Forming an LLC
A limited liability company can separate business and personal liability. You file with your state, appoint a registered agent and usually draft an operating agreement. State filing fees and annual requirements vary.
Trademarks
A federal trademark registration with the USPTO protects a brand name or logo used in commerce. Search for conflicting marks before you apply.
When to use a lawyer
Blended families, significant assets, business partners or a disputed trademark are situations where professional advice helps.
