Dog insurance: how it works and what it really covers

TapTapSearch Editors · 2026-10-20

Dog insurance pays back part of your vet bills after you pay the clinic. You choose a plan type, a deductible, a reimbursement rate and an annual limit, and those four choices drive almost all of the price.

The three plan types

Accident-only covers injuries such as swallowed objects, fractures and bites. It is the cheapest option and a sensible floor for young, healthy dogs.

Accident and illness adds conditions such as infections, cancer, allergies and hip dysplasia. This is what most owners mean by pet insurance, and it is where large bills usually come from.

Wellness add-ons pay fixed amounts toward routine care such as vaccines and dental cleaning. Compare the yearly add-on price with what you already spend on routine care before adding one.

The numbers that set your price

  • Deductible: what you pay before the plan pays. Higher deductible, lower monthly price.
  • Reimbursement rate: usually 70%, 80% or 90% of the bill after the deductible.
  • Annual limit: some plans cap payouts per year, others are unlimited.
  • Age and breed: larger and older dogs cost more to insure.

Exclusions to check before you buy

Pre-existing conditions are excluded by almost every insurer, so buying while your dog is young and healthy matters. Also read the waiting periods, any breed-specific exclusions, and whether exam fees are covered.

How to compare quotes

Get quotes with the same deductible, reimbursement rate and limit from at least three insurers. A low monthly price with a low annual cap can cost you more than a slightly higher price with no cap.
