Choosing a cruise: Caribbean, Alaska, river cruises and last-minute deals
A cruise bundles transport, lodging and most meals into one price, but the experience varies widely by ship and route.
Ocean cruises
Caribbean cruises are the most common, with many short and week-long options and ships full of onboard activities. Alaska cruises run in the warmer months and focus on scenery and wildlife.
River cruises
Smaller ships sail rivers in Europe and elsewhere, docking in town centers. Fares are higher but often include excursions, drinks with meals and Wi-Fi.
What the fare includes
Most ocean fares include your cabin, main dining and entertainment. Drinks, specialty restaurants, excursions, Wi-Fi, gratuities and port fees are often extra. Add these up before comparing.
Cabin choice
Inside cabins are cheapest; balconies cost more but add space and views. Location matters if you are prone to seasickness: lower and midship cabins move less.
Last-minute deals
Lines discount unsold cabins close to sailing. Good for flexible travelers who can get to the port cheaply, less so if you need to book flights at the last minute.
Before you book
Check passport and visa needs for each port, the cancellation policy, and whether travel insurance covers cruise-specific issues.
