Finding cheap flights: timing, flexibility and fare types
Airfares change constantly, and flexibility is the biggest advantage you can bring.
Be flexible
Check prices across nearby dates and nearby airports. Midweek departures and less popular times are often cheaper. Use fare calendars and price alerts to watch a route.
Understand the fare type
Basic economy fares are cheapest but often restrict seat selection, carry-on bags and changes. Add up bag and seat fees before comparing with a standard fare.
Last-minute flights
Last-minute fares are usually higher on busy routes, but deals can appear on less popular routes or at off-peak times.
Business class deals
Premium cabin sales and points redemptions can bring business class within reach. Compare the cash price with the value of points you would use.
Flights to Europe
Shoulder seasons, spring and autumn, often combine lower fares with good weather. Consider open-jaw tickets that arrive in one city and leave from another.
After booking
Check the airline’s change and cancellation rules, and set an alert in case the price drops and the fare type allows a credit.
