Protecting your car: extended warranties, roadside help and GAP
Several products promise to protect you from big car bills. Some are useful, some duplicate cover you already have.
Extended warranties (vehicle service contracts)
These pay for certain repairs after the factory warranty ends. Read exactly which parts are covered, the deductible per repair, whether you can use any repair shop, and how claims are paid. Be wary of unsolicited calls about your “expiring warranty”.
Roadside assistance
Covers towing, jump starts, lockouts and flat tires. Check whether you already have it through your car insurance, credit card or the manufacturer before buying a separate plan.
GAP insurance
If your car is totaled or stolen, insurance pays its current value, which can be less than you owe on the loan. GAP cover pays the difference. It matters most with small down payments, long loans or cars that lose value quickly. It is often cheaper from your insurer than from the dealer.
GPS trackers
Trackers can help recover a stolen car and some insurers offer discounts for them. Compare subscription fees and whether the tracker needs a professional installation.
